Veolia is a leading processor of food and organic waste in metropolitan Melbourne, operating its advanced in-vessel composting facility (NRS) in Dandenong. The facility is the only metropolitan site licensed by the EPA to process food waste and has been successfully converting food and garden organic waste into high-quality soil improvement products since 2000.

In-vessel composting is a controlled biological process where organic waste is broken down within an enclosed aerobic environment. The process takes place inside a concrete reactor, where temperature, humidity, and air circulation are carefully managed to achieve optimal decomposition. This method enables naturally occurring micro-organisms to transform organic waste into nutrient-rich soil additives while eliminating harmful pathogens and weed seeds.

Source-separated food organics are processed at the NRS facility to produce AS4454-certified organic growth media for distribution back into the Melbourne market.

In 2018, the facility’s plant control system was fully modernised and completely rebuilt to improve operational efficiency, monitoring, and system reliability.
